Millman’s Appliances rooted in Sussex community

Millman's Store

"LEWES – Among the many modern appliances in Gary Chorman’s showroom, it was a 1928 Maytag butter churn and washing machine combo that brought a customer to near tears.

"My grandmother had that in her old kitchen," said Fenwick Island resident Shirley Hollie. "The fridge and washing machine were like new things to her."

With about three left in the world, the butter churn-meets-washer is one dual-use system customers won’t see on most retail shelves today. But customers walking into Millman’s Appliances in Lewes are often in for a trip down memory lane while they’re browsing for a new stove.

Chorman has a few of these old gems tucked away in his showroom, a cozy country store with old wood floors and a sleek new copper ceiling. Like the Maytag machine, most of the other vintage appliances are gifts from loyal customers."

Millman's Torch Award

"Millman's Appliances was recently honored with a Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau, the latest success in a decades-old business that was once the nation's top-selling Montgomery Ward catalog store.

The award, which honors leaders in business ethics and community service, was delivered to Millman's Appliance Owner Gary Chorman, a Lewes native who has worked in the store since he was a student at Cape Henlopen High School in the 1980s.

Founded in 1969, Millman's Appliances was originally a full catalog store owned by Howard and Shirley Millman, where customers could purchase clothing, appliances and household items, along with other, more specialized items not typically available in general stores.

Until Montgomery Ward discontinued its catalog in 1984, Millman's was the top-selling store, receiving two to three shipments a week, Chorman said."Back in the day, that's how everyone got their products before the internet," he said. "All our neighbors and friends would buy boat motors, paint, ladders, clothing and even jewelry from our catalog store. It was quite interesting what this store represented in the community."

Sussex steps up to help Louisiana flood victims

Louisiana Flood

"In about a month’s time, Milton resident Amy Kratz encouraged dozens of people throughout southern Delaware to step up and give back by donating a truckload of items to Louisiana flood victims.

On Oct. 6, truck driver Teyon Harmon, president of the new nonprofit East Coast Large Cars, arrived at Millman’s Appliances warehouse off Hudson Road in Milton, loaded up a 53-foot-long tractor-trailer and headed south to Baton Rouge, La., where torrential downpours in August displaced thousands of families and left at least 13 people dead, according to the Associated Press. Greater Beach Grove Baptist Church in Baton Rouge will distribute donated items to families in need.

Gary Chorman of Millman’s Appliances, who provided storage space for the donation drive, said he has been blown away by the generosity of his neighbors..
